The ultimate Guide for hiking, exploring, and mountain walking whilst visiting the Canary Island
 of Gran Canaria, Spain

Gran Canaria is a paradise for hill walking in the Canaries, with inhabited cave villages, lake side walks, spectacular mountain scenery and wonderful flora & fauna especially in the Spring.  There is a great deal to explore and discover in the central mountains.  There are a great variety of hikes on outstanding trails, for all abilities of walker, many of these are off-the-beaten-track and the climate is excellent for trekking.

I believe that this is the best English language Guide book for walkers and visitors coming to Gran Canaria and that my local knowledge of walking routes and transport can make these Guide(s) vital for anyone wanting to discover the real Gran Canaria.

August 2012:  There are 2 distinct versions of my hiking Guide both named:

'Don’t leave Gran Canaria without seeing it'

Volume 1 'The Shorter Options' Guide
- includes 35 half day hikes, many short there-and-back walks and a lot of local information covering the whole of Gran Canaria.

Rambling Roger recommends:
This Guide is for the visitor who wishes to discover the real Gran Canaria by foot ( casual hiker ) or maybe by car, and most visitors to Gran Canaria will find this Guide essential to get the best out of exploring the island.

Rambling Roger recommends:
This Guide is for the experienced hiker who wishes to discover the island by foot, mostly on a network of old donkey tracks that used to connect the major towns and villages before the age of the modern transport.

We have just returned our 2 weeks in Gran Canaria and thought you’d like to know that we found your walking guides really excellent. We found the route descriptions were clear and the times very realistic for our pace.  We had a great 2 weeks of excellent hiking – the whole experience surpassed our expectations.  Many thanks for the invaluable advice you gave us so willingly pre-departure

All walks in both Guides include a map, however a map of Gran Canaria should be purchased to accompany my Guide to get the ‘big picture’ as my maps are only very local to give a rough guide of the route.

The format of both versions of the Guide is loose-leaf, designed to enable you to take an individual walk description with you rather than a hefty book - this way you can just take that description, a map and a compass!

See also our pages about hiking equipment and safety.

Over the years, Roger and Eileen have explored every Camino Real and almost every track up there, in order to compile a dossier of mostly circular walks, of unequalled quality.  Roger prides himself on keeping off tarmac as much as possible and also on providing you with the bus times you require to reach the start and get back from the end of each walk - essential details which are omitted from all walking books I have seen for this island

I have now been walking regularly in the mountains of Gran Canaria over the last 5 years.  It is an amazing island - it is truly a miniature continent - so varied, that you never get tired of walking on the more than 1200 km of footpaths, that the locals claim the island has.
And maybe the most important thing: The weather - it is said to be spring all year long and that is ideal for walking.  I can't think of any better place to walk
